Implications of the central metal abundance peak in cooling core clusters of galaxies

چکیده
Recent XMM-Newton observations of clusters of galaxies have provided detailed information on the distribution of heavy elements in the central regions of clusters with cooling cores providing strong evidence that most of these metals come from recent SN type Ia. In this paper we compile information on the cumulative mass profiles of iron, the most important metallicity tracer. We find that long enrichment times (≥ 5 Gyr) are necessary to produce the central abundance peaks. Classical cooling flows, a strongly convective intracluster medium, and a complete metal mixing by cluster mergers would destroy the observed abundance peaks too rapidly. Thus the observations set strong constraints on cluster evolution models requiring that the cooling cores in clusters are preserved over very long times. We further conclude from the observations that the innermost part of the intracluster medium is most probably dominated by gas originating predominantly from stellar mass loss of the

Metal Abundances in the ICM as a Diagnostics of the Cluster History
Galaxy clusters with a dense cooling core exhibit a central increase in the metallicity of the intracluster medium. Recent XMM-Newton studies with detailed results on the relative abundances of several heavy elements show that the high central abundances are mostly due to the contribution from supernovae type Ia. The dominant source is the stellar population of the central cluster galaxy. With ...
متن کاملMetallicity Gradients in X-ray Clusters of Galaxies
We present the projected metallicity profiles for a sample of 17 rich galaxy clusters observed by BeppoSAX. We find that the 8 non-cooling flow clusters have flat metallicity profiles. On the contrary, a strong enhancement in the abundance is found in the central regions of the cooling flow clusters. All the non-cooling flow clusters present evidence of recent merger activity suggesting that th...
متن کاملTemperature and abundance profiles of hot gas in galaxy groups – II. Implications for feedback and ICM enrichment
We investigate the history of galactic feedback and chemical enrichment within a sample of 15 X-ray bright groups of galaxies, on the basis of the inferred Fe and Si distributions in the hot gas and the associated metal masses produced by core-collapse and type Ia supernovae (SN). Most of these cool-core groups show a central Fe and Si excess, which can be explained by prolonged enrichment by S...
متن کاملIron Abundance Profiles of 12 Clusters of Galaxies Observed with Bepposax
We have derived azimuthally-averaged radial iron abundance profiles of the X-ray gas contained within 12 clusters of galaxies with redshift 0.03 ≤ z ≤ 0.2 observed with BeppoSAX. We find evidence for a negative metal abundance gradient in most of the clusters, particularly significant in clusters that possess cooling flows. The composite profile from the 12 clusters resembles that of cluster si...
متن کاملA Chandra Archival Study of the Temperature and Metal Abundance Profiles in Hot
We present the analysis of the temperature and metallicity profiles of 12 galaxy clusters in the redshift range 0.1–0.3 selected from the Chandra archive with at least ∼ 20, 000 net ACIS counts and kT > 6 keV. We divide the sample between 7 Cooling-Core (CC) and 5 Non-Cooling-Core (NCC) clusters according to their central cooling time. We find that single power-laws can describe properly both t...
